The term “Natural Flavors” is a camouflage for everything under the sun – soy lecithin, MSG, extracts & ingredients from GMO crops,…
What’s worse, some of these so-called flavors are being developed using aborted fetal cell lines.
There are large companies whose purpose is to produce flavor enhancers and fragrances.
They team with the big food giants to create products for human consumption. And we consume them day in and day out.
Their main goal is to get us addicted to the flavorings so that we will continue consuming and profit their bottom line.
Senomyx (one of the leading biotech firms in the flavor enhancer industry) develops patented flavor enhancers by using “proprietary taste receptor-based assay systems.”
These testing systems provide scientists with biochemical responses and electronic readouts when a flavor ingredient interacts with their patented receptor. This lets researchers know whether or not their flavor enhancer is effective.[1]
The receptors are made from HEK293.
HEK stands for Human Embryonic Kidney cells. HEK293 originally came from a healthy, electively aborted fetus in the early 1970s, whose cells were then harvested and cloned.[2]
Senomyx’s products provide enhancements to savory, sweet, and salty flavors, while blocking bitter flavors and providing cooling taste sensations.[3]
They are marketed as a way to help companies “improve the nutritional profile of their products and achieve a competitive advantage by maintaining or enhancing taste.”[4]
A food company can use a Senomyx chemical to enhance the sweetness of sugar or savory flavors. This allows them to boast “reduced sugar” or “no MSG,” giving the illusion that the product is healthier.[5]
In reality, it contains a chemical (not well-tested) that is NOT listed on the label.[6]
These flavor-altering compounds are used in small amounts. Hence, companies like Senomyx do not have to go through the FDA’s typical approval process necessary to release food additives.
Instead, the compound is classified as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association — a process that can take as little as 18 months, with a mere 3 months of safety testing on rats.[7]
They do NOT need to list these compounds on their labels. They simply have to list artificial or natural flavors.
So, again when you see the terms “Natural Flavors” or “Artificial Flavors” on a food label, this means, “Buyer Beware!”
It would be impossible to provide a complete list of all the products that contain aborted fetal cell lines.
Here is the most up-to-date that I could find:
This should help you in making shopping choices. Just keep in mind that all these big corporations – Nestles, Kraft, Campbell Soup, Pepsi, etc – own many other corporations.
Every dollar we spend is a vote for how we want the world to be.
If we don’t start (or continue) voting well with our spending, we aren’t going to have REAL food choices.
It’s comprehensible to me why we have to develop flavors in the first place.
I advocate that God did not mess up when He created our planet – us and all the food available to us.
And none of His products need enhancing by a chemical company.
They are perfect just as they are.
We don’t need to make them into convenience foods (I am speaking of highly processed foods here, not just what you might consider junk food).
Food additives are in almost all of them. These additives affect us on a cellular level.
They add to our toxic load and contribute to all sorts of disorders – cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, autoimmune conditions, diabetes, IBS, colitis, Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety,…
All too often I hear, “But, who has time to shop and cook?”
My question is: “Who has time (and money) to be going to a zillion doctors trying to get help for their mounting ailments?”
None of us do and none of wants to be investing our time and money in doctor’s visits that leave us feeling hopeless.
Eating REAL food can help us avert this.

I can help you figure out how to move further along the continuum of eating REAL food (the foods that God gave us in the form that they were meant to be eaten).
I can help you figure out how to do so feasibly and sustainably.

One of my clients put it so simply:
“I am amazed how much weight I lost in just a few weeks when I cut out processed foods! And how much more energy I have and clearer my head is. And sourcing good, quality ingredients isn’t hard. In fact, it’s pleasureful. There is no comparison between the butter I get from the farm and what I get at the grocery store. Thank you, Karen, for helping me see this.” James O.
Peace and grace,
Karen

Hi Karen,
Thanks for another revealing blog about the hidden ingredients we ingest without much thought. Your insights are always right on time, especially now during the holiday season. Thank you!
