Indecisive? Missing out in life?

Not seeing the results you want in life in regards to family?  relationships?  your health?  your career? …

Could it be because all too often you wallow in indecision?  Is indecision holding you back?  Is indecision making you feel like you are wasting your life, missing out on too many opportunities, not progressing as you would like?

It sure has held me back.  In fact, I have spent my whole life being indecisive!  I was afraid to make decisions for fear of making a “wrong” decision or having someone get upset with me or just not knowing what the best option was.

BUT I am learning there is a better way to live!  Making decisions is freeing and gets me where I want to go.

What if you took the attitude that there is no wrong decision, just like there is no such thing as failure?  Just as failure is feedback, consequences of decisions are simply feedback.  With that feedback, you can continue forward – making decisions and redirecting as necessary.

Not deciding is indulging in confusion.  Sitting in confusion will never serve you; it will never get you anywhere.  It is like rocking in a rocking chair.  You can rock all day and all night, but you will not go anywhere.

Yet, when you make decisions ahead of time and honor those decisions, you save time and move ahead.  You are no longer wasting time wallowing in indecision.

Additionally, making decisions increases your action.  And it is your actions that lead to your desired results.

What is more, making decisions increases confidence.  You may argue, “I do not make decisions because I do not feel confident.”  But that is not the way it works.  Decision making is how you “take action,” and “taking action” is how you build confidence.

You can only build confidence by facing the fear and going through it.  It is okay to feel fear (or another negative emotion).  A feeling will not hurt you.  Feeling the negative emotion is the only way to get to the other side.

So, do not wait to be confident before making the decision.  Instead, feel the fear, make the decision, know that there is no wrong decision, and confidence will follow.

It is exciting when you start doing this.  The more decisions you make and the quicker you make them, the more confident you will feel and the closer you get to your dreams.

This will not feel comfortable at first, but it will become more and more comfortable as you practice.    And consider the fact that in most cases, you are the only one who has to like your decision.  So, challenge yourself to practice liking and honoring your decisions.

I leave you with two questions to ask yourself:

  1. What decisions would you make if you knew that you were the only one who had to like the decision?
  2. What if “failure” were no big deal?! If you could view failure as learning something new, what decisions would you make now?

Peace and grace,

Karen
