The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

person walking in the desert

Does life seem like it is throwing you more and more curve balls?

You are close to retiring – considering if, when and how to do so.  You feel like things should be settling down so that you can focus on eating better, exercising more, enjoying your hobbies, and working on those projects around the house that you have been putting off.

Yet life is anything but settled.  You are caring for aging parents.  You and/or your spouse have health issues that inhibit living life as you dream.  The grown kids still need support in some way.  At least one is having trouble finding full-time employment…

So, the thought of transitioning to a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole food diet, sounds impossible.

You are telling yourself: This would require a lifestyle change.  I cannot manage that with everything else going on!

Scrap that thought!  It does not require an overnight “makeover.”  It simply requires deciding to make a change and deciding what the first step will be.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”  Lao-tse

I am here to help you make that first single step and support you every step thereafter.

But YOU get to decided what that first step is.  The second step can only happen after you have taken the first step.

And there are countless reasons for changing.  I unpacked many reasons in my recent blogs on our modern-day food processing techniques, the added sugars and sweeteners, and the infinite list of other additives.

Is it ridiculous to think that cutting back on sugar and modern-day processed food could give you the energy and stamina to cope with the curve balls being thrown at you?

That replacing sugar and modern-day processed food with nutrient-dense whole foods will nourish your body, so you feel satiated and satisfied?  That nutrient-dense whole foods could reduce the aches and pains caused by inflammation and other chronic health problems?  That you could have restful sleep?

Besides all this, do you really want to be dependent on chemical companies to feed you?  Especially knowing what I have talked about in my previous blogs regarding our modern-day food processing techniques, the added sugars and sweeteners, and the infinite list of other additives?

AND knowing that I barely scratched the surface regarding the harm these foods are for our organisms, and the ill will of the companies that produce them?  They are not looking to nourish us; they are seeking to fill their pockets.

So, what is your first step going to be in transitioning to a whole food, nutrient dense diet?  Or what is your next step?

Is it making your own dressingMaking your own bone broth?  Reading the ingredient list on a package?  Reducing sugar?  Making your own baked goods?  Swapping sweeteners in the recipes (and your coffee) for mineral-rich, naturally sweet foods, such as raw unfiltered honey, dried fruit, maple syrup, dehydrated sugar cane juice (sold as Rapadura), date sugar, and molasses?  Visiting a local farm market?  Adding butter to your food? Signing up for Karen’s next RESTART Program? Or something else?

What is your motivation?  Fit into your clothes better?  Decrease inflammation, aches, and pains?  Have the energy to serve your family and enjoy the grandkids (or the anticipated grandkids 😊)?  Have the vitality you desire for serving the Lord?…

Or help change industry standards through your purchases?  “Every dollar you spend is a vote for how you want the world to be.”

My first step was switching to organic produce.  I did not even know what organic was until 1999. But as soon as I became aware of the term organic and what it meant, I immediately switched to buying organic produce.  As I learned more about ancestral diets, I began introducing new foods and new cooking techniques.  It took me a couple of years to become 80-90% independent of processed foods, and many more years to become 99% independent.  What is best about this change, is I have good energy, my brain works better, I value my life (I didn’t before), AND I get to educate others and help them make changes.

All too often we allow ourselves to get stopped up because we think, “this is really hard.”  The result, we do not reach our dreams.  But what if we were to say: “This is really hard and that is okay.  I can do hard things!”

Not choosing keeps us stuck.  Decisiveness allows us to move ahead.

So, I ask you again, what will your first step (or next step) be?

  1. Hi Karen,
I agree that sometimes the most daunting aspect of planning change can be the initial energy you expend to begin the journey. This is especially true with changing our unhealthy eating habits, to ones which will benefit our bodies and minds. Appreciate your encouraging words!
